On the 18th we had our first fight, and that was the hottest fought on this side…. We marched all the previous night, doing 28 miles, and got here at 5 a.m. We had just got a mouthful of coffee and a ration of rum, when we were ordered out to the field, and from 10 a.m. fought till dark…. The fire was something awful, and some of the Highlanders, who were at Magersfontein, say that the fire was worse here than there.

Bennett described:

We lay on our stomachs all day in the hot sun, and took a shot whenever we could. The bullets whistled round my head all day but I took good care to keep low and so got through without a wound. I was so tired that I fell asleep several times during the day, and was that way when that rash charge was sounded and so was unable to participate in it, which perhaps was for the good…. I didn’t get a chance to fire a shot all day on account of the risk of hitting our own men who were just ahead. We all agree that we have had all the fighting we want, and will be glad to get back to the line of communication as soon as possible.
